Good piece outlining why it's folly to mount a wholesale defense of the "liberal international order" just because Trump appears to oppose ithttps://foreignpolicy.com/2018/08/01/why-i-didnt-sign-up-to-defend-the-international-order/ …

I say "appears to" because the image of Trump as a committed opponent of the "liberal international order" is largely a mirage, exaggerated for political effect, so chagrined elites have a cause to rally around. Trump has done almost nothing to meaningfully challenge that "order"

Intentionally or not I'd say he has done plenty to undermine it

Like the EU trade war stuff and ping-ponging on NATO is kind of making US allies think about alternate plans, is my sense. I mean they're a long way away from breaking away but can the next guy undo their sense that the US isn't a reliable partner is the question

Also I mean personally insulting figures like Merkel probably means more than it ought to in a world of totally rational actors

All of these are so superficial. Imposition of modest tariffs and a fleeting comment to Merkel aren't harbingers of the collapse of the international order. Criticize those things if you want, but casting them in the most extreme possible terms is the move I don't quite get

I mean we've been going in one direction for a long time; i don't exactly expect the liberal order to collapse while Trump is in office. But presuming Trump represents the new Republican Party I'd say it could eventually lead to something different
