The sudden dominance of social media in dictating perceptions of US politics is still really under-theorized. It's a sea change, it happened insanely quickly in historical terms, and we're barely aware of it day-to-day. Big part of why "the Trump era" continues to confound

It is confounding but the value of Twitter having shown us all the incompetence and opportunism of the pundit class had been invaluable. Maybe that's part of why it's so confusing right now

analogous to "paleo diet" we need "paleo sociology" as likely wired to take signals from fellow humans superseriously fm days when we only got them from tribe, instead of fm every jackhole on earth; we likely grossly overprivilege and overreact re sense of what world is like now.

Indeed. I have to say that this is not an argument that is unusual outside of those who have been forced by their profession to adjust quickly. For the fast majority of people, if you talk to them about political engagement, they will quickly - very quickly - address this point.

But is it so dissimilar in effect than everyone basing their opinion on and regurgitating what they heard on one of 4 programs on television, pre social media?

:D I was sorta getting at this earlier. I’m confounded most by you. Segments of left leadership feel co-opted & base neutralized imho Soc media has helped people misunderstand on purpose. It’s been intense but trying to chill out - Portland seems an early adopter of everything..

It didn’t happen quickly at all. For a decade numerous studies from places like Harvard and countless polls warned that the big media outlets were perceived as blatantly, dangerously partisan. So first we got the rise of Fox News as an alternative source. The next evolutionary
