It's true that Obama also departed from this dogma in certain respects (and was denounced as sinister by many of the same people now cheering Trump) but Trump does seem to have gone further. As president Obama never publicly offered to meet Rouhani (though they spoke on phone)

Obama said the exact same thing.

He also departed from traditional American Exceptionalism dogma in certain ways. Apparently the electorate is not as entranced by this dogma as the foreign policy professionals

It's not quite a departure from American exceptionalism until he willingly makes concessions to an anti-US imperialism nation (like Iran) to facilitate diplomacy... Meeting without preconditions is just a news headline and a photo-op for trump...not really a concession
-
True, insofar as it's a legitimate departure, it's largely rhetorical. Although the rhetoric has taken tangible form at times, with North Korea obviously being the most high-profile example

You should have your own show. I expect we'd disagree on much, but you consistently are rational. So rare! Even when I disagree, I appreciate your analysis.
-
I'd also add that your analysis seems to me to be 'un-tribal.' It challenges me to be the same.

I don't mind presidents meeting with any world leader. It's that this president is singularly ignorant, ill-prepared, and playable.

Trump is definitely trampling on many of the traditions that are considered by many to be "American exceptionalism dogma," but I don't see what that has to do with the preconditions line of thinking. What's the overlap?

Or then it again it may be little more than his standard cheap & desperate political deflection. The difference between collective exceptionalism & personal indifference and greed is what? I suspect in an informed vote on this point your view would, as they say, "shit the bed."

For him the biggest downside would be he doesn’t like to travel.

US President Trump's actions are echoed by Indian Prime Minister Modi. Both are Disrupters Extraordinaire..only way to question the Status Quo & move forward..
