Detroit has always been one of the most-segregated major cities in the country. One of the reasons is that a good part of the population migrated from the Deep South to come work for Ford and GM. They brought there politics with them.

On the ground, crossing 8 mile from the north in many respects its like falling off a cliff. East Pointe, Warren, Hazel Park, Ferndale, Oak Park and Southfield all decent enough, cross the street, largely, instant ghetto...its something. Gotten a tad better in recent years.
