Elites are often unaware of how invested they are in the mythology of American exceptionalism. Hence why this aspect of Trump's performance has gotten little overt attention, even though, as I posit, it's driven much of the outrage

I don't agree with a lot of it, but this piece is interesting and touches on similar themes. (I prefer framing Trump not as a radical departure but just another manifestation of slow, inevitable decline)https://foreignpolicy.com/2018/07/23/rip-american-exceptionalism-1776-2018/ …

If there is any redeemable trait about Trump it’s his rejection of both flavors of American Exceptionalism. Great article.
-
As I note, I don’t think it’s a particularly conscious repudiation on his part. So whether he deserves “credit” is debatable

to this Canadian, Trump's observation that US shared blame for events was sensible and obviously true. I disagree on "repudiation". Trump clearly regards US as "exceptional" nation, while also believing that its recent leaders have followed very imperfect policies.
-
in addition, from a negotiating perspective, accepting some blame is surely far more conducive to progress than unmerited and offensive moral preening in Nikki Haley style. There's already too much of that.

One of the rare times Trump made sense and sustained it for 3 or 4 sentence running. We are long overdue to get real on the conflict with Russia. It is both countries fault, but about 95% our fault. Trump is not nearly as insane as those friggin neocons.

Which is all the more reason to respect the rights of other nations and their citizens. No excuse for the paranoia or greed or whatever that led to killing millions of fellow humans in Vietnam, Iraq, Libya, too many to list. They were no threat. Not a single American more free.

Only underacknowledged in the sense that wood being flammable goes under acknowledged by fire fighters putting out a building. Folks don’t outright say it bc it’s a requirement to believe this before you’re concerned. If you don’t believe the US is good, you didn’t give a shit.

Exactly. American's want their brutality sanitized with civilized words and manners. All the tweets cheering on CBS's showcasing this trio (500,000 dead kids just from Albright who says it was "worth it") & barely a bit of regret for blameless lives losthttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/hillary-clinton-madeleine-albright-and-colin-powell-to-appear-on-madam-secretary/ …

He is emblematic. But let's just change that. Maybe the US could become as humble as Portugal if we try. They got low profile and seem sensible.

Trump taking low road by cutting corners. Bad for US in long run.
