'Why the Left needs...' and other such prescriptive bromides never work well on me. But what is worse is the founding of an argument on the mere claims of authority. The goal becomes apparent: conformity even in view of unchecked claims. Only an idiot would fall for this.

I agree re: prescriptive bromides. Just say what you think is true, and whoever agrees with it, agrees with it. That style of argument always struck me as an ideological crutch.
