There's an entire class of bureaucrats, think tankers, journalists, etc. who are professionally/psychologically committed to NATO and other international institutions, and they resent having to make a case to the unwashed public for why those institutions are still necessary

That a mild rhetorical challenge by Trump can provoke such existential panic exposes these people as riddled with latent anxieties, now brought to the surface, which stem from the arrogant assumption that they are divinely endowed with the right to stick around forever

The irony: Trump's challenge is just that, rhetorical. Despite their hysterical warnings, the Western Alliance is unlikely to change in any fundamental way because of some rude Trump tweets. Still, if tweets are a crisis, maybe the real crisis is deeper than they'd like to think

Exact same scenario exists in regards to Syria. The same class of people spew their lies, and are appalled, in the rare instances, when they have to defend them.
