They've so rarely ever had to make such a case that it's bred a certain class-wide arrogance; they take offense at the very idea that making a case is necessary. They want the eternal virtue of these institutions to simply be presumed, prima facie, by all right-thinking people

That a mild rhetorical challenge by Trump can provoke such existential panic exposes these people as riddled with latent anxieties, now brought to the surface, which stem from the arrogant assumption that they are divinely endowed with the right to stick around forever

The irony: Trump's challenge is just that, rhetorical. Despite their hysterical warnings, the Western Alliance is unlikely to change in any fundamental way because of some rude Trump tweets. Still, if tweets are a crisis, maybe the real crisis is deeper than they'd like to think

There’s an entire class of bureaucrats, journalists and think-tankers who are committed to the rule of law, freedom of the press and the separation of powers guaranteed in the Constitution. Some institutions are established for a damn good reason and deserve to be defended.
