It's especially relevant that they both went to the same elite feeder prep school because that culture is even more insular than Yale/Harvard. Those kids are cultivated from birth to ascend to power. They're living embodiments of the lie of meritocracyhttps://twitter.com/mtracey/status/1016547809842089984 …

The fact that Gorsuch and Kavanaugh literally went to the same high school (Georgetown Prep) is so perfect. In the name of "populism," popular rule is inevitably handed off to insular klatches of elites who rhapsodize to one another about how great American meritocracy is

It shows how infinitely flexible the notion of "populism" is that people who ascribe to that label can stand up and celebrate the nomination of a Bush-era creature of the DC legal establishment whose life trajectory has exactly nothing in common with the average citizen

They celebrate it because they've been taught that the sacred Supreme Court must only be accessible to an infinitesimally tiny sliver of society, whose wisdom is inherently superior because they went to the finest schools and secured the finest clerkships. It's a lie

GP alum '73. There certainly were kids from money, but most of us felt middle class. Some guys even worked in the dining hall to help with tuition. It wasn't Eton. Maybe things have changed.

Easy to "feel" middle class when you're positioned relative to some of the wealthiest and well-connected families in the entire country.

Since this seems to be a significant point of contention for you, you should mention that Justice Thomas makes it a point to pull his clerks from a diverse pool:https://abovethelaw.com/2017/12/justice-clarence-thomas-wants-you-to-know-his-law-clerks-arent-ttt-no-matter-where-they-graduated-from/ …

Where else would one find a SCOTUS l level talent? There may be others out there, but I'd guess they're few and far between.

Yes, by the tender age of 5, those kids are already preparing for the bar exam and reading MBA for dummies books. Their schools might be insular but that doesn't mean they are "living embodiments of the lie of meritocracy," as if this is observable.

The effects of social capital are real. It’s one of the biggest concerns to be addressed when discussing social mobility in 🇺🇸
