Generally speaking, hectoring people for being dissatisfied with their lives is a losing proposition. You can toss out all the statistics in the world, but you don't inhabit their minds

Life expectancy in 1968 was under 70 years. Today it’s 78.7 years. Drugs that didn’t exist in 1968 saved my life in 2015-17. Maybe you have an argument things are worse than 2005 for certain sub-demographics? But certainly not 1968.

Maybe a worthy life can't be measured exclusively in terms of the availability of pharmaceuticals?

Just stick an iPhone in their face and remind them of all the amazing apps that are available to accomplish tasks which people used to be paid reasonably to do, that should convince them

50yrs ago a family could afford to buy a home a new car and go on family vacations off of ONE income. Now we can barely get by on 2 incomes, no new car (ours are 2002 and 2003) maybe 1 family weekend stay in a hotel with a pool somewhere nearby. And God forbid one of us gets sick

The number of people globally climbing out of deep poverty is growing so rapidly that graphs can hardly represent it. Meanwhile the west grovels in self-immolating guilt and/or empty consumerism. Ideologies of negativity are self fulfilling, my friend.https://twitter.com/simongerman600/status/1014572328523587585?s=21 …

This tweet makes me sad. Especially from a journalist who should be aware about the problem that mainly bad news get coverage. You should try to look beyond the fence.pic.twitter.com/yJMNaDRpEM

It’s important to stay optimistic in these difficult times. We should never forget where we come from and where we’re at now. Nostalgia is a real concept and a real problem when we forget to be rational about the things idealize from way back when.

If Frum were conducting a clinical trial of a new medication and 41% of subjects came back reporting severe abdominal pain, he would conclude that the medication may cause hypochondria.

If they didn't have cable, six computers, cell phones for their kids, etc., their stasis would be better today than it was fifty years ago. I'm not a troll. I respect you, Kyle. People don't have to spin the hamster wheel.

Talking about how predatory lending and advertising has eaten up those gains is completely valid, and should be discussed. The fact that we can't be 'lazy' despite record gains in automation should be discussed. Philosophers define problems, not solutions. Do you see any light?
