I want to say Occupy was the exception, but I'm not even sure about that...

Coverage of Occupy plays into this thesis. In the early days (I was there...) there was widespread consternation that media was ignoring the movement. Only when a critical mass was reached (usually involving police beatings) did most media find themselves forced to cover it

I think there's an element of the freak show to this. Everyone wants to see the freak show. Most in the media don't see the far left as freakish in the way they see the far right.
-
That's true. Right-wing stuff is always seen as a novelty to be intimately dissected for meaning. But because many in media have at least some affinity with left-wing movements, they don't see them as novel or needing of dissection

Also can't forget the corporate interests backing the embedded rooting of the Tea Party. This is during a time when people thought* Obama was going to wield a sledgehammer in office. How wrong we all were.

Is there any reason to believe that this isn't completely by design? The tea party has proven to be no threat to the establishment. The far left clearly is.

You have to remember that media coverage of the TP, and other groups like BLM vs. KKK, and Trump, and the
#resistance, all fit a prevailing MSM narrative. Said narrative ignores larger undercurrents in society and is the elitist way of ensuring Americans fight each other.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

That's because the media RACES to report divisions among the GOP. But they do their best to IGNORE divisions that the DNC doesn't want reported. That's why Bernie never got a fair showing.

Don’t feel bad; they’ve been ignoring the protests by indigenous Kanaka Maoli to the illegal annexation of Hawaii since 1893.

One candidacy does not make an insurgent left movement. You’re right it’s not comparable, but wrong about the reasons.

Usually because it reflects poorly on libs when their constituents are screaming profanity, burning cars breaking windows and attacking the defenseless

The Tea Party had 2 policy positions; spending and Obamacare. Current insurgent movements have no core policy positions. That's the problem of UAW workers in a coalition with the Sierra Club and Black Evangelicals in a coalition with Planned Parenthood/LGBT groups, etc.

Is it a movement against tariffs and for free-trade like Clinton, or for tariffs and against free-trade like Bernie? Socialist or not? Since Trump has no visible firm policy, it's hard to report on a movement as bipolar as that it organizes against.
