These voters have no connection to the entrenched NYC political machine, and likely even resent it. Usually, the low-turnout primary scheme works to the advantage of incumbents, but it backfired this time: skillful organizing only required bringing out a few thousand new voters

Quite a few progressives learned the hard way in 2016 when they could not vote for Bernie that you must register as a Democrat more than 6 months in advance of the primaries. And they did. And way more will be ready in 2020 in New York as well.

The trick played the 'establishment' of making two separate primary dates backfired harshly.

It seems that multiple layers of NY voter suppression helped Alexandria in this case, since they didn't have the resources to knock on ~70% doors, but knocking on ~30% was enough because of low turnout.

Why “concerned”? How did going ideologically “hard” work out for Republicans over the last 10 years?

Remember- in NY you can only vote in primaries when you are registered with that party. Independents can't vote. My take- majority of registered democrats within that district want the establishment gone. We won't know anything more until the general. Keep in mind
