The liberal/left intelligentsia increasingly seems to be lurching toward an “all immigration controls are inherently oppressive” position, which is fine, but they’ll eventually discover that large segments of the Dem coalition, including organized labor, are not exactly on board

To be clear: I’m not even denigrating the position. It has a long and noble provenance. I’m simply observing that the position fairly obviously conflicts with the stated interests of Dem coalition members. (I also don’t use the phrase “open borders,” which is a pejorative)

Neolib Dems have been gunning for (already meager) programs like Social Security and Medicare since the Clinton presidency. They call it "reform" but it = cuts & privatization. Dur Obama years, Durbin & Obama led that "grand bargain" crusade on behalf of big donors, wage cutters

Tough to fight for wages, working conditions, and living standards while inviting an underground labor force that undercuts every mandate/expense/condition that applies to the legal workforce.. that the business lobby will happily seek out..

This problem is grossly overstated but, to the extent it’s true, it’s a failure of labor law enforcement not immigration. We can disagree how easy it should be to live and work here, but anyone who’s ok with punishing immigrants should be out of the big tent.

You kind of don’t know what you’re talking about. A third of labor is lower wage nonwhites who are either immigrants themselves or on their side; a third are public sector professionals liberal on immigration. Then the rest (industry & construction) have some anti-immigration

End ICE, which was only created after 9/11. End private detention centers.

I wish that were true, but knowing this is your and presumably others’ perception is a good start. When I see a majority of Dem electeds clamoring to disband ICE, then we’ll be where we need to be as a party.

This lurching is purely opportunistic--Trump's in office, immigration controls make him look bad, so it's a useful cudgel to beat him with. But as soon as a Dem is in the White House, families will be split without any cameras present, and without a single Maddow tear.
