This 2017 report comprehensively details widespread use of family separation as a matter of policy pre-Trump. While Trump has added his own variant, it's willful ignorance to pretend that this was not a regular feature of US immigration policy before https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/KIND%20-%20Betraying%20Family%20Values.pdf …pic.twitter.com/HEU1qVl4PF

For those bringing up the issue of asylum seekers: yes, they too were subject to criminal penalties and family separation pre-Trumppic.twitter.com/DuQ4HA8Cl2

I get the sense that a lot of the rallying has been spurred by a (faulty) sense that Trump alone has brought about family separation. It's the media's fault. I know that activists are generally aware of the reality

There’s a difference between what’s written and what’s happening in practice. But I guess, this makes it “OK” regardless 🙄

"As a matter of policy" is what the report says with regard to the pre-Trump era. You can then read the report and find multiple examples of this policy being enacted.

am I wrong to think that the difference now is that this policy is being used against asylum seekers? who are effectively being denied the right to apply for asylum?

Does this report contradict this PolitiFact rating? Or is that what you mean when you say "Trump has added his own variant"? http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2018/jun/19/matt-schlapp/no-donald-trumps-separation-immigrant-families-was/ …

I think the two reports here can be seen to reconcile with each other: the Obama ICE policy did, indeed, include family separation as a deterrent, which is awful. And, it did so much more as a last resort, in much smaller numbers, only for repeat offenders.

FY10 - FY16: The average prosecution referral rate under Obama was 21% for amenable adults (family units included). Trump implemented an 100% criminal prosecution referral program. We're talking about a 500% increase in the practice of criminalizing undocumented immigrants.

Check this out as well. Not policy, but in PRACTICE women were deported without children, especially when they were young and adoptable. Notably, US adoption laws break international law- there are situations in which they NEVER find out their parentage.https://scholarcommons.sc.edu/law_facpub/79/

I keep seeing people being scolded for mentioning while Trump made an actual written policy? The first report I read about "lost" asylum seekers started the count in 2013. I get gaslit so much? I wonder what's really true.
