Harsh restrictionist immigration policy is a home-grown American phenomenon dating back centuries but sure, let's conjure up a phantom Russia connectionhttps://twitter.com/NewYorker/status/1008872159219978244 …

In Putin’s Russia, threatening to separate families is a way to rule by fear. It’s a lesson the Trump Administration seems to be learning. http://nyer.cm/a44ZE3f

There is a big difference between abuse from border control officers and facility workers and a widespread official abusive policy enacted by an administration. Not the same.

Not to mention the regime change and death squad policies applied to much of Latin America since 60's at least, or US drug wars etc. Chasing phantoms only helps to keep the status quo of what they're supposedly protesting(or "resisting") firmly entrenched

It is authoritarian. I do not think it is plausible to claim a connection. Mr. Trump does not need a Putin or a Suharto to consult and to copy. He has long been fond of such brutal measures. Yes, he fails to whitewash these actions with speeches about values and good intentions.

It's just that he doesn't know how to talk to liberals. He scares them. He talks to his base - they love it. Maybe not for what he says, but that what he says is driving liberals crazy. Obama talked real good to his base - and now we're finding out that drove conservatives crazy.

Of course, Jeff Sessions just said he specifically enacted the policy as a deterence, but why let facts disrupt the daily #whataboutism.

She has often written about her experience with this kind of policy. It makes the point that such a policy is an instrument of state terror. Here as well as there.

the problem is that centering one’s rage erodes real-time passion/conviction to stop it, it minimizes moment that *is* unique, in favor of a maximalist revolutionary fantasy. People didn’t respond to murder of Trayvon Martin that this was not unprecedented.pic.twitter.com/9dF7zrzWCA
