Calling attention to the continuity between Trump-Obama isn't "whataboutism." If outrage is situational, contingent, and driven by cheap partisanship -- rather than genuine ethical aversion -- then the outrage isn't worth anythinghttps://twitter.com/JothikaN/status/1008588686089281537 …

I did pro bono work in detained court during the Obama administration. I saw kids crying while their dads were brought out in orange jumpsuits and shackles before the immigration judge. Migrant families were torn apart. Immigration lawyers called Obama the “Deporter-In-Chief.”

It can incidentally have good effects even if not in good faith.

The experience of the Obama years should have drilled home that those "incidental good effects" are fleeting.

If I'm following this logic, it seems to be: "Obama deported a lot of people, he was nicknamed 'Deporter-in-Chief' therefore it's okay that Trump is taking parental separation to the extreme and caging children.

Exactly. Either you have consistent values or you don’t. The left right paradigm is a false dichotomy - and a brilliant control mechanism.

Especially when former Obama officials delete their tweets when called out about their hypocrisy

Right, it is not “whataboutism”, it is about actually fixing the root problem incl in law rather than allowing continued managed failure.

Is that sort of like outrage over Jim Crow. Is there a purity test you can suggest to distinguish between genuine ethical diversion and petty partisan politics? Can you make it equal for apologists for this regime?

BTW can you explain to us the legal consequence of continuing "policies" in determining the lawfulness of current practices? Is it even seen as political dicta?

I'm not certain their are legal consequences, the US is exceptional and above consequences on every level. Trump thinks he and his minions are untouchable.

If the left cared about children as much as they claim to now Obama would have never won a second term. They don't they've proven kids don't matter when their guy is the one bug-splatting or locking them uppic.twitter.com/QymcaXYT08
