From Russia to Korea, never ceases to amaze that the dominant domestic criticism of Trump’s foreign policy is that it’s been insufficiently bellicose. This is a sicknesshttp://thehill.com/homenews/senate/391787-dem-leaders-hit-trump-on-north-korea-summit …

Read the article. Most of the criticisms are predicated on hawkish premises about “legitimizing a brutal dictator,” as Schumer put it.

So Kim isn't a brutal dictator? I mean, each of the leaders cited in this article needs to move on from politics and get out of the way. But do you seriously disagree with the pretty general concerns they pointed out?

I disagree that “legitimizing a brutal dictator” ought to be the frame though which this meeting is perceived. That framing is always invoked, usually by the right, to undermine diplomacy. I would defer to the South Korean framing

I trust Moon in this process. But no need to reject reality to disagree with their frame. Kim is a murderous dictator much in the fashion of Saudi Arabia et al.

Legitimizing the regime without any regard to HR violations allows them to continue w/impunity. The exact problem with Saudi Arabia that many of this crowd rightly points out is now being solidified without condition right before our eyes. So don't complain about it in future

“Legitimation” of Saudi was for the purpose of selling them arms and abetting their regional hegemony. “Legitimation” of NK is, apparently, for de-escalatory, anti-conflict purposes. Big difference

Except we have no serious framework to justify this exchange or this conclusion. Not yet. Maybe after Moon finishes his work that has been exceptional so far.

This is how you begin to establish a framework. See Moon’s statement applauding the summit. Clearly there are elements in the Administration that would love to undermine the process, which is reason to be wary
