"The Western Alliance," which sanctimonious elites now posture as great defenders of, has also brought about disastrous wars, economic calamity, and decadent technocratic institutions that almost everyone else hates

Your argument is equivalent to saying, "Just because breathing has always worked for you, it's a weak position to claim anyone should continue breathing." It's breathtaking in its ridiculousness and stupidity.
-
I would counter that analogizing an artificial alliance of nation states to the human body is a lot stupider

Many of our attitudes towards trade and defense were born from the cold war era. A rethink of these positions is decades overdue.

What exactly should we be rethinking? Average monthly income in Russia is $539. Average monthly income in MEXICO is $840. Exactly WHAT are poor ass Russians buying from us that justifies adding vulnerability and weakening our national security posture to deal with them?

Trump is the definition of an elite: -New Yorker - Ivy League education - able to avoid draft - inherited wealth - Never had to deal or worry about everyday problems - insulated from reality and responsibility.

Interesting. So this is what you think a smart person sounds like? Because you use a lot of words and repeat 'elite' a lot to basically say, "we should blow up alliances because they're old, and I don't understand how they work. elites. elites. sanctimonious. vestige".

The reason we need our traditional allies is PRECISELY because of the weakness of our position. Especially if we are pursuing isolationism or wanting to court vicious autocrats with a veneer of democracy like China and Russia and NK

All of the supposed allies are selling out to China. What now?

The problem with the last 50 years is that the cold war stratified economic systems as analogs for political ones. It married the notion of democracy with capitalism, and bred it into a religion. Paying no heed to all the ways that capitalism is broken.

To be fair, that alliance won the Cold War which isn’t that long ago, but to keep in decades old structures without reasoning their cost or usefulness to current reality is silly.
