This new article aims to explain the development of the protests in Hong Kong from June to September 2019. This sad story is not yet finished as violence continues into October and there is no end in sight.

There is much wrong with the current approach to policing. The Police are deploying anti-riot and undercover officers to local community policing situations. The danger is that anti-riot policing now becomes normal policing.

Should HK join Singapore and USA in banning entry of non-residents who have visited mainland China in the prior 14 days and quarantine residents who have?

So prisoners in Hong Kong (some for breaking anti-face mask law?) are making face masks. Dystopia indeed.

Bar Association calls for a Commission if Inquiry. It is now easier to count who does NOT want a Commission of Inquiry (Two: Carrie Lam, Police).

Restore Police discipline is critical. Well said Albert Cheng. Hong Kong police aren’t even doing their real jobs any more. Carrie Lam must restore discipline in the force

The Government fails to understand how dynamic young people in Hong Kong are, and how they can organise when they are determined. This is not “foreign forces”. Some HK protesters received training overseas: govt

The argument that ‘rioters hijacked march’ & use of this as justification is classic use of ‘mad mob’ or agitator theory. HKPF know this perspective on crowds is flawed but yet they deploy it as justification for yesterday’s tactics

A rights group and pro-democracy barrister question the legal basis for the "arbitrary" mass arrests in Causeway Bay yesterday, after the police themselves admitted that some of the hundreds held were likely to be innocent bystanders.

There must be a Commission of Enquiry into ALL violence during the protests in Hong Kong, by Police and any others.

The Junior Police Officers Association (JPOA) states that peaceful protesters are as guilty as the violent, showing a key problem that the many in the Police do not tolerate any political protest.

A truly independent organisation to investigate complaints against Police is long overdue in Hong Kong. District Councils unilaterally investigating complaints is a good first step.

To be very clear about the problem: Frontline Police, especially PTU, have lost discipline and use excessive force that they now treat as routine Policing. This is wrong.

HK Police still tells us this is proper use of police powers. And, Carrie Lam still refuses to appoint a Commission of Inquiry. HKers are outraged and will definitely fight on for freedom, human rights and rule of law!

WashPost obtained documents on HK Police use-of-force guidelines. Policing experts analysed vids against those rules & found police violated them in 70% of incidents reviewed. Detailed story by @tiffanyliang_hk
