No! We are locked in, big time. Of course we should try as hard as we can to slow change, but have to adapt as well. It's not either or, it's both, as much as we can. Adaptation is bloody hard, will take decades and is not helped by being labelled as giving up.

I haven't got mine. I must have been too far off the spectrum / filtered out in the data cleaning.

We'll learn to if we try! We'll learn how to measure it and also exactly what we want to measure. But we won't if all our activism, management and research effort is a slave to current (broken) targets, in the name of being "cost effective", "efficient", "optimal", blah blah.

Worse still, targets encourage people to focus on the target, rather than the desired outcome. Eg focus on threatened species rather than a landscape clothed in healthy ecosystems. Extinction is bad, but surely shrinking and declining health of ecosystems would be (is) worse.

But who governs the institution (the academy), given self regulation's propensity for self interest.

But ... knowledge is a societal creation, and I guess at times in that process society does call for authoritative sources for things (facts and concepts) that our partners might not be able to judge and make sense of through their own experiences.

I hate the idea of scientists and their institutions being the arbiters of facts (being scientist in one of the most respected institutions in the world), ... surely our contributions can be judged be how well they work in the real world.

An interesting piece about where knowledge comes from, the case is quite niche, but I think it has implications for where all knowledge comes, including interactions with values and institutions.

"what we call “facts” do not stand on their own. They require supporting institutions (especially the academy) to maintain their facticity, regardless of these facts’ ability to accurately describe and predict the world."

This, from A tiny Rufus Fantail travelled with a couple on their boat on the lake for about 3 hours while they waited out the fire. Jim is being very very patient. Eileen said the bird spent time catching flies etc on the boat when not resting. Love to all.

Is good governance of the Anthropocene *the* 'global common good'?? Wish I was in Oaxaca, sound fantastic. Was a couple of years ago.

Agreed notions of what is, what is right and what is socially sanctioned are embeded in everything we do. And we don't realise it. And it varies between contexts and groups. Quite a challenge for governance of novel cross-sector issues!!

Many road maps by designed reinforce the status quo, as they are able doable actions, and the only thing people can imagine, currently do, and be held accountable to is the status quo. Transformational road maps risk being unimplementable!

How do we accelerate the evolution of governance systems, to enable transformational adaptation, but not so fast that crazy shit happens. Slow, governed governance change underpins the stability and resilience of liberal democracies. I do hope it is not also their undoing ...
