It usually takes longer to fact-check a Rolling Stone feature than it does to write it. Each review is like an IRS audit. It's miserable.

@mtaibbi more likely your colleague strong-armed 20-yr-old sexual assault victim into going public against her will than fact-checking issue

@BlatantHomerism Well, that's not true. The source had already spoken publicly as I understand it.

@mtaibbi just staggering to me that this made it to print & now rs seems to be blaming college student who's out of her depth

@BlatantHomerism Reporting on anyone requires asking tough, even hurtful questions. It's not easy to know how to do this with a rape victim

@BlatantHomerism I wouldn't have known how to write the story Sabrina wrote. Would have needed outside advice on how to vet an abuse victim

@missbumptious Apparently there was a deal made with the source that bypassed the normal review process. That's not to blame her... (1/2)

@mtaibbi @missbumptious Doesn't it strike you as bizarre & irresponsible to promise a source you won't confirm or check their information?

@mtaibbi -But the truth is much more important than "having an exclusive", no matter what the subject is. Rush to make "headlines" screws up

@itsweezie That's just it --RS can't "rush" anything. Publication schedule, which includes fact-check, doesn't allow it.

That excuses the false allegations RT @mtaibbi: It usually takes longer to fact-check a Rolling Stone feature than it does to write it.

@JoeLipari I'm not excusing anything. I'm just talking about my own experience with the RS fact-checkers.

.@mtaibbi Meanwhile, @RollingStone is losing the last of its credibility. It's been downhill since Hunter Thompson left.

@mtaibbi But you guys cheered with schoolgirl enthusiasm when the IRS went after conservative groups, didn't you?

@Gooms I said that in the sense that the process is difficult and stressful, as it should be. And I never wrote about the IRS story.

.@mtaibbi is it normal practice at RS not to interview the person you're accusing of a crime because a source doesn't want you to?

@mtaibbi @marynmck so procedures are the same for RS as for New York Times. Doesn't matter the article is in RS, journalistic ethics apply.
