    Indeed. Understanding is an innately human experience that encompasses consciousness. So, can machines be conscious if not "present" in the world that they occupy (and manipulate)? AI fails at this b/c it is developed in a silo that often excludes social sciences that could help.

    Reading: AI still doesn’t have the common sense to understand human language (A more robust benchmark set reveals shortcomings.)

    And ELIZA did so without the user data that GOOG employs. Perhaps it is time to start working with social sciences to use that data more effectively? Just sayin’

    ELIZA could do the same, or better, in a tiny fraction of the cost. Over 50 years ago! Yet an example of how is being oversold. is not the solution to all your problems! Proper engineering is: thinks first about requirements and design options!

    I needed this today

    You don't really know something until you can rebuild it yourself from basic principles! It's a good approach - learn everything and keep that child - like curiosity, question everything... and be humble enough to admit things that you don't know.
