try upgrading from the chrome app to signal desktop on osx. ill save you the trouble you cant. it nags you to upgrade, then demands that you aim it at a file. the upgrade process doesnt do any of this, its just broken. there's no export in the chrome app either. wtf.
oh i guess this is the procedure: chrome://extensions find signal turn on developer mode do an upgrade of the chrome app from that section then run signal chrome app then it lets you export your data. totally fluid. like water. golf clap.
Good points.
What are you expecting here? If someone had access to your hard drive then it's already game over. There is no magic encryption that Signal could use to protect you. You need to enable full-disk encryption in your OS. Or turn off message logging if you don't want logs stored.
this is not 100% true. Chrome still encrypts your data for instance. The approach here is to make someone else life harder to get to your secrets ...
Signal Desktop always does that...
Secure IM in general, have a lot invested in security of data in-transit but not as much while at-rest. Mainly under the argument "if they access your HDD then is game over". I don't agree with that argument at all. If that was true why bother to encrypt passwords locally?!
Look in ~/Library/Messages/Archive. Can confirm.
