I also think it's important to try and equalize the horrifying dystopia novels with some that hold a brighter image of the future as well. Perhaps we are so negative about the future because those are the stories we are being told.

But that's part of the job isn't it? Convincing students that reading not only makes you a better, more educated person, but that it can also be FUN when you're choices aren't restricted to things like The Scarlet Letter.

While novels like 1984 and Brave New World are important and key in English, I feel that it is also important to include some positive views of the future, like Foundation and perhaps even Dune.

I think I'd structure mine around four major novels: Foundation Brave New World The Metamorphosis The Odyssey/2001: A Space Odyssey One book for each quarter.

I need ideas to get students interested in reading the Scarlet Letter - any ideas?

Standardizing education means less innovation and fewer chances to explore new literature and new ideas.

Common core is a stamp the gov proposes as a “1 size fits all” for public education. It’s a narrow minded approach.
