This is not new at all. They do this every protest, and give this same answer every time. If it’s a gesture made in good faith, it’s a weird one because, without fail, it is criticized. ESPECIALLY considering there are other options in the uniform code. seattle.gov/police-manual/

At Sunday presser @carmenbest says “Our nametags are there for anybody who wants to know. “ Says officers wore black on badges in mourning for 2 lost in state. And @seattlepd has strenuous review: "No one is going to use force and go unchecked and unnoticed.” @KUOW

It seems to me that the Chief of Police could amend the uni code to be like “mourning badges are cool except when you’re dealing with a lot of people and then you need to make your identification 100% clear” and then we wouldn’t have to have this conversation every year.

(And by “could” I mean “could bring it to the union to discuss and probably get nowhere” because SPOG is the only union in existence that I don’t stan and they’ve made it clear that any and all public-facing reforms are not of interest)
