The Trump administration is unraveling the good-government reforms of the post-Watergate era, writes 's . "The reforms had frayed long before Trump came along. But they are now in danger of being stamped out."

One of the under-rated stories of the 2020 race is how much candidates are talking about and supporting democracy reform. For the deep dive, check out a new report by and . It will be well-worth your time.

I say this as supporter of student debt cancellation (on the Warren model): This is above all a money-in-politics story. It's about how smart donors can shape the agenda through candidates and think tanks (incl 2 that I've worked for.) Influence of money is complex and pervasive.

Remember that question about whether Roberts would vote to break a tie on motion to call witnesses can be better stated as, does McConnell have 3 "hall passes" to give away (Senators allowed to vote yes because it won't matter) or only 2? Collins and Romney will claim first 2.

I wrote about how Trump is trying to tear down all of the already-fraying govt reforms of the post-Watergate era:

Presidential nominating contests are about more than candidates--they show the ideas that are emerging and what voters care about. In our new report, w/ , we looked at the vibrant debate about improving democracy itself in the 2020 contest:

A Gallup poll from 4 weeks ago said that "broken government" is the #1 CONCERN of Americans -- above jobs, immigration, health care, etc. See where the candidates stand on structural political reform. Great stuff! via

It's not just that Ernst, Scott, et al want Biden to lose the nomination. Maybe. But their real scheme is, if Biden does poorly in Iowa, they can claim it shows voters were alarmed by "corruption," and so it's plausible Trump was, too. It will give them cover. Don't engage.

Starr's "Rodino Rule" -- that impeachment has to start w/ bipartisan support -- is exactly like McConnell's "Biden Rule" that he invented to justify blocking Garland. And equally fictive.

This particular tone of patriotism resting on ideals, imperfectly realized but still foundational, is very Obama. Doesn't assume magical bipartisanship, but still assumes shared commitment to a few basic principles or aspirations. In 2020 field, Booker came closest to that tone.

Worth watching all of this. Not only exact right tone for indicting Trump (far beyond Ukraine), also a perfect statement of US as defined not by borders or identity, but by ideals and principles. If that can't cut through the fingers-in-their-ears of GOP senators, nothing wil.l

There's a big lesson for the next Dem president in this (awful) Trump move to rescind and replace the "Waters of the US" rule: This was a day-one Trump/Trump donor priority. And it took exactly 3 years to complete. Next president will need to start regulatory fixes immediately.

Retweeting this thread even before I see what follows "And worst of all..." Idea of pervasive corruption creates an environment in which a Trump can act w/ impunity, as I argued last year

Agree completely. A constitutional amdt might be useful (it wouldn't do anything in itself) but is mostly a symbolic call. Public financing, whether through vouchers or boosting small donors, is the solution that works and has been largely upheld by courts.

NEW: Elizabeth Warren just announced plans for an independent DoJ task force to investigate and prosecute Trump administration crimes. This is such a big deal.

The Senate is usually a pretty polite place where everyone is the "gentleman" or "gentlelady" or "my friend." A lot (clearly not all) of work gets done w/ agreements and consent. That's just how the Senate runs. But that's not the Senate we're in now. By a long shot

The generic-ness of Trump's endorsements could indicatethe nationalization of partisan politics. Or that Trump, despite viewing everything as transactional, still doesn't understand the basic transactions of politics, like helping Reps seem like they're helping constituents.

It still surprises me how completely generic Trump's endorsements of congressional Rs are. Always, "strong on crime, the border, 2d Amendment." Never anything that acknowledges meeting the guy or something the Rep. has achieved for the district. Any competent staffer can add that
