People who primarily use Matlab know that they're not programmers. People who primarily use Python don't know that they're not programmers.

I think that awareness will grow as the software grows. The relevance of many s/w engineering practices typically becomes obvious as complexity increases. Lot of programming done in research simply does not reach the threshold.

Hey now! Academics are at non profits. Software engineers are expensive relative to the size, say, of a typical grant from the NIH. We desperately wish we could hire more! It's not out of ignorance.
