It's confusing if something is part of a thread, or a reply. Taking mentions off character limit is fine, but @ is central to conversation.

@jack first so it would be visible to our mutual followers--where the convo started. Now can't.

The vertical line connecting the tweets does signal that it's a reply but I don't know how intuitive that is, particularly for new users
