    My 2nd year in the industry, a more sr engineer told me that the only people who make these comments are those who aren’t technically capable themselves. He’s right. The ones who are more skilled are doing the work & helping me grow. They share, not tear people down. 4/7

    The average of trash is still trash. The companies failing to be average are relegated to dumpster fire status.

    10/ So unless you are a company like Google, whose cybersecurity is a competitive advantage, you don't want to excel in cybersecurity. You want to be average, or at most, slightly above average. You want to do exactly what your peers are doing.

    “Difficult to work with” = is having none of your nonsense “Needs a thicker skin” = has no plans to withstand your abuse So true in the military too.

    Someone recently told me that “difficult to work with” often really means “difficult to take advantage of” in creative industries, and I haven’t stopped thinking about that for weeks

    Folks saying "Watch what you post, think of your career." And I agree. I'm seeing a lot of people posting police apologetics, countering support for protestors with whataboutism, and repeating blatant state propaganda... ...and I never want to work with them.

    In more concrete terms, I spent roughly 20 years trying to get as skilled as possible on a niche technical pursuit. I am much happier doing significantly less "hardcore" security work but towards a purpose more aligned with my personal values and with people aligned on the same.

    I find it helpful to prioritize my time by net impact on the most people. It helps highlight whether I'm working on something I personally find fun or whether it'll have broad and/or lasting value. In doing so, I also found that I get more long term satisfaction from the latter.

    The security industry is responsible for the dogma of "use a VPN". Unethical companies are merely just building their marketing on top of it.

    It bothers me that certain VPN providers try to use dishonest messaging to peddle VPN products over youtube as some sort of magical security catch all. In reality you're paying bottom dollar to give someone *all* your data. It's the last thing you should be penny pinching on.

    Every report on a ransomware payload that digs into encryption methods and code artifacts but neglects the killchain that allowed it to infect an entire network deprives defenders of information to protect themselves. Payloads change, abuse of network configuration can be fixed.

    If there is one truth about infosec, it is that you'll never know everything. We're all students, and we're always learning. The challenge and education is why most of us ended up here.

    Attendees of , I'm curious- In infosec, it can seem like everyone already knows everything. And that's daunting for many. If you consider yourself well-versed in some area of infosec yet still learned something new today, would you mind liking, commenting, or RTing?
