It’s about purpose and priorities. Our communities deserve our best. Violence warrants our most robust nonviolent response. Poverty (homelessness) is structural violence—economic injustice eg poverty wages, etc. all contribute to this vicious cycle.

A “No Poop in the Streets Campaign” must be based on the City of LA’s Right To Housing strategy: (1) street engagement, (2) interim and permanent housing options and (3) prevention. It’s a matter of common decency, human dignity and public health.

Creating a public bank owned by the City of LA is uncharted territory. While no jurisdiction in CA has established such a financial institution LA could be the first. It’s a matter of financial literacy, economic justice and equity. Let the due diligence begin.
