Finally, these comments are harmful at a more personal level. They resonate with my own self-doubt: did I only get that interview because I am a queer and Mexican? Is everyone just thinking that? I now know it is not. I have gotten other interviews since and I did a great job.

    6) Having said all that, we should work on what do we expect from diversity statements and make sure we are not just selecting people that know what to say and how but are actually doing meaningful work. Having a clear rubric like UCB can help with that.

    5) These searches help against pervasive bias and social structures that favor generic excellence while discriminating against minority populations.

    4) Why is it assumed that all non-white/non-male have the same ideology? Even in how different people approach diversity in STEM there is vast (and productive) disagreement.

    3) Diversity was evaluated in terms of ethnicity/race and gender because those are the demographics asked in job applications. The committee has no information on class, sexual preference, "ideology", other than what people might have disclosed in their applications.

    2) Diversity statements might be an important way to evaluate qualifications for teaching to a diverse population (which would be part of the job working at UC Berkeley).

Disclaimer: I was a finalist in one of these searches. 1) These particular searches were explicit in the fact that they were hiring faculty to, not only do research, but advance diversity initiatives on campus (so the diversity statement evaluated how well you could do your job)

I am proud of how the community has acted in the face of this scandal. I have seen a responsible revision of the data, support for students and collaborators, as well as empathy and concern for Pruitt as a human being.

New paper! analyses genomics, microbiology and climate in a natural plague focus in Tien Shan. We ( and our Chinese colleagues) found biofilm-affecting plague variants pop up over and over again, likely altering flea transmission.

This take/tear down culture is about shutting people down rather than dialectically engaging and having substantive disagreements — and unlike Butler, most of the targets are not famous/high resource people on that level.

This is amazing teaching! What should you know about the Krebs cycle - thread! Why should you care? 1. Cells are amazing! 2. This is the preferred source of energy of multicellular life (it affords enough energy to sustain big bodies)
