Men, on the whole, love feeling useful. And sharing information they - correctly or incorrectly - think someone doesn't know, is one way they try to feel useful. They do this to other men, too.

Dude, everyone likes to feel useful. Everyone likes to feel clever. 'Mansplaining' is when a dude assumes a lady needs her own experience/expertise/meaning told to her. It's the suggestion that he automatically understands everything better than her & it's irritating af.
-
Agreed. My point is that a lot of what's sometimes billed as mansplaining doesn't fit that category.

“Men just want to show enthusiasm” only works to describe mansplaining if women are not enthusiastic, don’t like conversation, or don’t want to feel useful
-
No, but women are generally better communicators. And the men who are 'mansplaining' in this way tend to be a bit more socially awkward.

There's a big difference between talking over someone and just throwing some information that they may already know in as a conversational gambit. There's a major difference in intent - asserting superiority vs just trying to communicate and share.

I've not seen that chart, despite being a screaming harpy, but yeah, I think mansplaining is misused. To the point that it's losing its original, and important, meaning.
-
I think that's the problem. Useful term being stretched beyond all usefulness.

If all else were equal. Which it isn’t. Shouldn’t be a surprise that some well-meaning clumsy enthusiasm doesn’t go down well, if women have already been worn down by actual patronising men; assumptions about what women get to know and who gets to perform “I brought u a fact” etc
-
Yeah, that makes sense. I think it's useful to have a distinction between power plays and bumbling attempts to be friendly, though.
