Periodic Reminder: When debugging, you must first accept that something you believe is true is not true. If everything you believed about this system were true, it would work. It doesn't, so you're wrong about something. This is a surprisingly common stumbling block for devs.

One of the ironies (tragedies?) of programming is that making something complex is so easy.

It's amazing how many common "idioms" there are in software, particularly for organizing stuff -- and yet how hard it is to actually reuse these idioms across apps. My advisor Daniel Jackson has been thinking about this for a while:

Of course the most absurd thing about React is not really React's fault. They built an immediate-mode framework on top of the immensely stateful DOM. If only the DOM had been designed as a usable application UI/graphics framework in the first place!

And of course, the idea behind react, SwiftUI etc. is that you tear down the skyscraper every time you turn the lights on or off…

There are days when I feel I can't express what I feel. Today, after deciding to not spend the day in England, all I feel is great sadness. There will be better days. In the end we're gonna be alright. And if we are not, it's not the end.

I took my 8-year-old to the office on Take Your Child to Work Day. As we were walking around, she starting crying & getting very cranky, so I asked her what was wrong. As my coworkers gathered round, she sobbed, 'Daddy, where are all the clowns that you said you worked with?' 🤣

… and then you sit infront of your noisy old and wonder … amazing, how did they get such a smooth experience with a 25 MHz CPU and 32 MB of RAM? The “worst” part to me is … Is it really a factor 100 to 1000 better today?

People build their work around their life, not the other way around. This is especially great for new parents, but everyone benefits from being able to structure their days to maximize their happiness and productivity.

Because everyone is always effectively "blocked," everyone plans ahead. It also means anyone can disappear for an hour, a day, or a week and not feel like they are holding the company back. Even me!
