In 2019, I revisited the Disney Renaissance. This year, as Pixar celebrates 25 years of computer-animated features, I’ll have a new column on all of their films. Today, I kick things off with Toy Story:

  5. I realize that not having International Film or Animated Feature as categories means the Oscars would rarely honor such films. But those categories also allow voters to treat such films as an Other, and it's a frustrating precedent.

  9. I imagine this reaction is largely thanks to the yearlong subscriber base that's built in. But still, I have to imagine the eight months between the end of the Mandalorian S1 and the first MCU show will be the longest such gap the service has with its major titles.

  10. It's telling that, per the call now, Disney+ added just 2.1 million subscribers between December 31 and February 3. Not quite as easy to sell less easily swayed audiences when there's nothing something hot and new on the service.

  11. I wonder if the lack of a big hook in the next six months will be reflected in either subscribers dropping off, or people just...not visiting the service. The latter's better in the long run, but neither is ideal.

  12. Some audiences are going to stay static with Disney+ -- families that love Disney Junior/Disney animation content, big nerds such as myself, etc. But those people with a less passionate interest in Disney need something buzzy to a) be hooked in and b) *stay* hooked in.

  13. These dates are both totally reasonable and...an awfully long time from now. What other new content will Disney+ have in the next six months to raise interest? (I'm sure they'll have something, but...what?)

  14. Re: Disney+, this is a very good question indeed! On a similar note, do the numbers from today reflect any of those subscribers who get a year free thanks to Verizon? I wonder.

  15. The question that won't be answered for another three months: how many Disney+ subscribers are there in Q2 2020? Will the perceived sense of the bloom being off the rose post-Mandalorian be reflected there?

  18. As I note here, nostalgia is the foundation of the Walt Disney Company, but it's not an infinitely renewable resource. There's a good deal of proof that remaking the earliest Disney animated films is tantamount to box-office poison. But you do you, Disney!

  19. The recent announcement of a Bambi remake led me to write this essay at , talking about how Disney has to evolve its remake strategy when it's not reviving Millennial nostalgia.

I wrote about how the final episodes of BoJack Horseman and The Good Place looked death in the face, and how one of the two shows wound up being vastly more daring than the other.

  21. It's a low bar, but Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made is easily the best Disney+ original movie so far. Fortunately, it's also quite charming and funny, and quite the follow-up to Spotlight from its Oscar-winning director! (Seriously, it's pretty good.)
