If there's something positive for me in , I feel as a young scientist this experience has shown me just how important keeping REALLY excellent records of raw data/analyses and making my data publicly available are.

What successful projects do biology undergrads in your computational biology group undertake? Some ideas include collecting empirical datasets, running sensitivity analyses or simulation experiments, possibly writing simulators/pipelines. Other ideas??

Being a lab biologist is just scribbling "C1V1 = C2V2" on paper towels over and over again until you die

I received official notice that I was awarded a CRNA pilot grant to investigate 'locking' the structure of dynamic RNAs through 3D design for rapid structural determination. This is my first award as a PI, and I am honored and excited to work with the CRNA and .

The work to get a dedicated data repository and consensus on an open data policy took years of effort (starting w/NSF in 2005), both in setting up processes and in getting buy in. There was a lot of resistance. Submissions dropped. Its value is now very clear.

Enjoyed A highlight for me was a great talk by on the distribution of mutagenic effects after duplication. Also one by Felix Wu:

"What does the fox say?" is a perfect doctoral thesis. Title is a clear question. The sections: 1. Begin with background 2. Motivates the question 3. Presents hypotheses 4. Describe a potential real-world situation 5. Conclude with difficulties in answering question

This is a *really* great program for undergrads from groups underrepresented in science, with a ton of thought that goes into the planning and mentoring.
