Friend: Should I walk you? This neighborhood is scary. Me: Is not. Also, I live here. Friend: If you’re sure… Me (indignant): Yes, I’m sure can walk in my own neighborhood by myself. Mom (text): Careful walking back there’s people with crow bars breaking things downstairs.

Mom: How do I get your dog to stop begging when I’m eating? Mom later that day: Can I give your dog some of these chicken scraps off my plate?

Playing with resin recently and I’m kinda proud of this. I still need more practice but I might try to do more of this… prob with a typed label in the future.

I would just like to share that Youtube autogenerated captions heard “Anopheles gambiae mosquito” as “an awfully scary mosquito”.

I love bringing hello dollies to potlucks because they never don’t start a conversation. Usually it’s mainly “wtf are these?” but still. I enjoy a good conversation.
Coworker: I ordered blood but they said it’s going to be a little later than normal since they’re getting a lot of orders because of the holidays. Me: Oh that makes sense Me a second later: wait… what?

Finally started playing Oxygen Not Included and I have no regrets. Don’t Starve Together and Dwarf Fortress space baby? Yes, thank you, don’t mind if I do.
A woman brought in a spider for me to ID the other day, made me promise not to kill it and wanted to know the scientific name, not just the common name, so she could do more research. When she left she was brainstorming pet names for it. I love people sometimes.

I played cat tv with birds for Kitten this morning who kept looking behind and under the phone when the birds went off screen and then angrily slapping the phone before finally just flipping it into the ground and walking away 😂

Kitten has figured out that I turn my phone screen back on by touching it and is very upset that it doesn’t respond to paws. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a frustrated cat before today 😂

I appreciate that I’m someone people often feel they can express their secret queerness to but it’s depressing how often that’s followed by “but obviously I’m never going to actually do anything about it”.

I love reading old research sometimes because you find things like a researcher got his colony mosquitoes to mate and take blood meals by letting them loose in a bathroom and watching them while hanging out in the tub.

Pictures could be better and I’m regretting how dirty that corner of the cage is BUT! check out what I got to watch from basically start to finish in my new (still hopeful) mosquito colony, this morning 😁 🦟

Anyway, my new temporary assistant got to ride along while I vacuumed this tunnel for resting mosquitoes and then tried really hard to come back to the lab but I did eventually catch it and set it back down where it belonged. The experience kinda made my day, though.

Okay so I took another picture and went to grab the lizard to put it back down on the rocks with all the other lizards and it made a run for it again… Good reminder to put my hair up in the field, I guess.

I have a really cool idea for a project and I’m simultaneously really excited about it and terrified that I won’t be able to do it because… well… insects don’t always cooperate. It’s a a really cool idea tho.

It’s 113 degrees Fahrenheit outside my lab so I’m postponing field work to one of the cooler 105-107 degree days later in the week.

I was all worried because I didn’t have time to eat this morning and then I came to work to discover chocolate bars and homemade pear pie in the free-for-all space at work so I’m happy now.

The thing I love most in this moment about being an adult is I can just eat sardines and egg salad and nobody’s mean to me about my smelly food because that’s rude and also it’s delicious.
