Literature belongs to everyone, even historians. And some fine works of history have been written by literary scholars. No reason why it can’t be done the other way around.

This is a straw man “debate”. MAGA exists and many vote for it because our political class has promoted policies that have hurt and degraded our democracy in countless ways. You can have the American political economy or you can have a healthy democracy, but you can’t have both.

also, i think that in the past 7 years the "econ anxiety" vs "bigotry" argument has resolved in favor of "bigotry." The GOP is a car dealership owner's son party, a boat owner's party, a mcmansion & truck party. So while broad econ is important as policy, it doesn't move MAGAs.

Some of the worst takes I see from historians and other scholars, usually at the richest and most elite institutions, are variations on the argument that whenever liberals in power did something economically radical, which benefitted the poorest, they were actually being racist
