Today's one of the times I thought ugliness will overcome the world. But I bumped on 's stunning, haunting Fox Fires based on the Finnish legend of the Aurora Borealis...& I think the world may still have a chance after all.

Beneath Ceaseless Skies set up a Patreon last year to allow them to continue paying the new SFWA pro rate. If you made a New Year's Resolution to support SFF short fiction, this is a worthy destination for a few bucks a month.

DAY 1 of the “Where the Veil is Thin” Anthology Kickstarter. ⁦⁩ wrote a WILD, FUNNY, & UTTERLY BRILLIANT “Choose Your Own Adventure.” I wrote something that made both editors write to tell me they burst into tears. CURIOUS? KICK IN!

Part of the pleasure of reading gōkan (& other Edo era books & prints) is to spot and identify such signs. Here to close today is the current cover of Waseda Library’s copy of 'Fuji no shirozake’ (Episode 7)--the three different seals tell us it's NOT the original cover. 6/6

Kōnantei uses his seal only in two of the handful of gōkan he produced. I’m not sure what it represents, but AFAIK it's his only one. Gōkan authors, artists, & publishers too (as here, a crane for Senkakudō) had devices like this, a neat way to add their presence to a book. 5/6

...a gift inherited from his teacher, Toyokuni 1--here he is, wearing his seal. This one is known as the toshidama 年玉 (New Year’s gift) seal, as it represents a twist of cloth containing money, a typical toshidama given to children. 4/6

...in the camel gōkan (Episode 6), also right after Kōnantei’s name at the end of the preface. In the Mukashi Otoko gōkan it shows up once more on the final page, where artist & author both sign off. Note that the artist Kuniyasu has his own sign, too, but his was... 3/6

The sign decorates this gōkan’s preface, as a recurring motif around the border, & also appears right after where the author adds his name below the date at the end of the preface. So it's his monogram or sign, effectively. We've seen it before... 2/6
