Thinking about this thing anthropologist David Graeber wrote a few years ago. With few exceptions (doctors) the most vital workers in a shutdown tend to be the lowest paid:pic.twitter.com/JtQ9XoofcB

Hugely important right now: Grocery store clerks, truck drivers, janitors, food delivery drivers -- what else?

.@markbrooks' point that pay is a function of skill scarcity is the best explanation here. But the broader point that you don't realize how vital some jobs are until someone has to declare what's essential and what's not is something I find interesting.

Any healthcare working at this critical period in history needs to have their student loans forgiven 100%.

Yes, that was a classic, until all the "doers" on Ark Fleet Ships A and C were killed by a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone, that--yes--the "non doers" on Ship B would have cleaned and made harmless.

My first thought is how much you’re paid has something to do with how replaceable your job is- regardless of how vital they are, almost anyone can be a garbage collector. Not everyone can make important decisions that end up benefitting thousands of employees.

It’ll be interesting if doctor pay falls as a result of this episode. I imagine a lot that are attracted to it aren’t aware of the danger or stress in a time like this.

Italy has already lost 50 doctors. We will likely lose ~400. Some of the doctors will be retired volunteers. These people should have high schools named for them. Heroes.

One key consideration is how quickly you can train someone for a particular job from ~scratch. Generally the longer it takes, the more expensive the trained worker is. For example, a cashier is about 100X faster to train than a software engineer. (I've been both.)

May be as simple as “value creation” vs “value capture”. While many of these workers create great value, most have no way to better capture this value which leads to this paradox.
