I think I have a better understanding of programming now than when I was developing Downwell but I definitely lost the speed I had then from not giving a single shit about the performance and just brute forcing everything with infinite ifs

You made Downwell without knowing about ds_grids and stuff? That's pretty awesome, actually. It was one of the first things I learned (used it for an adaptive dialogue system) and I still haven't put out a commercial game.

You might want to have a unit test for that. Final Fantasy GameFaqs have reverse engineered formulas for calculating in-game stuff, check it out!

Think about it for a bit, but then just start doing it. Once you finish you can go back and refactor/fix it. It's better to have something ugly that works than nothing at all
