Unfortunately, I feel like there's an inverse correlation between how complex, dynamic, and reactive an indie game's text boxes are and the chances of it being finished...

Dynamic text just seems to be indicative of a designer/programmer who really enjoys going down rabbit holes of polish. It's also one of those things that's deeply satisfying for developers but probably doesn't sell anyone on a game that wasn't already sold by the basic premise.

I think there are other factors at play, like our (the indie game community's) fetishization of "juiciness". There's also pressure to overcome the perception of a game being too simple if it's 2d/pixel art. I'm guessing that a lot of indie devs translate that into "more juice".

I'm so guilty of this! It's so easy to succumb to working on the immediate, definite improvement to the game's visual details rather than working on something that takes more time to implement and may or may not end up being an improvement (eg. testing actual gameplay)

Rabbit holes are really snug and cozy - it's hard to leave once you're in one. :)
