Very excited for the moment when bland media people realize that Shakira's onstage moves are also cultural references to belly dancing

It is called zaghrouta. It's pronounced Zugh-roota. (the "gh" comes from the back of the throat). The plural is zaghareet, pronounced zugh-a-reet.https://youtu.be/Hp4HhR70XNA

Yup we do this is in parts of Southern Africa too at weddings and other celebrations.
-
I feel like it's prevalent in many parts of Africa because so many cultures on the continent travelled/traded with each other! It's amazing that Westerners don't know this

Literally these people are just *one* wedding away from knowing what zaghroota is! It’s not that hard to get invited to a ME/NA American wedding. Everyone and their cousin gets invited.

-
Just one wedding! Or they can watch a SINGLE MOVIE with subtitles! It's wild!

To be fair, it’s just not something us westerners are taught, so we’re unaware of the cultural significance. Now I know, and back it 100%. But this superior “OMG HOW COULD THEY NOT UNDERSTAND” approach is what makes less tolerant folks even less tolerant. Anyhow, Shakira rules.
