Yes. And I think it's sometimes worse than that: often they think they're measuring 'merit' but actually it's overconfidence, aggression, and a projection of supreme comfort-in-your-skin that comes from a place of entitlement.

Yes - and absolutely no one who believes in the power of diversity is saying it should override being *qualified* for the job. There are *plenty* of skilled, smart, great people out there from a number of backgrounds. Consider them. Promote them. Put them on your board/exec team.

There is also empirical evidence to show that companies that have relatively diverse boards and leadership teams outperform those that do not. Combination of smart people with different perspectives leading to good results.

White men generally think affirmative action exists to compensate for everyone else’s inadequacies of talent/qualifications when they apply for jobs, schools, etc. It’s really to compensate for OUR inadequacies in recognizing the talent/qualifications of applicants who aren’t WM.

“We believe in merit” as their board is comprised exclusively of white frat boys 🤣

There are several times when I, as a manager, had to make sustained, long cases for hiring people who were not white men. You would not *believe* the pushback you get even in management from white men who want to propagate more of themselves on staff even if others are better.

Yep. Research overwhelmingly shows that people preference white men in hiring and promoting. A company with 70% white male leadership, like Snowflake, is proving that they can't get beyond the surface when making these decisions.

Most importantly, the concept that "merit" just happens to translate to "98% white straight men in executive positions" is obviously nonsense. That is true racism -- to believe that merit is intrisically limited to white straight men.

It's literally a competitive advantage to be able to go out and interview the best of the best, not just take the 10 folks in your Rolodex who all look like you. That's not a failure on the candidates part, it's a failure on the companies and it holds them back.

This is such a ridiculous, obviously wrong argument. First, anyone who is a woman or POC or Black has to be twice as good as white straight men to get jobs. Second, it has been proven through multiple studies that companies are terrible at evaluating merit.

Back in my day we didn't have "Google." If you wanted to know where the ducks go during the winter you had to ask a cab driver and just hope to God he had the answer.
