We started with a corpus of 676m tweets, identified 69 hashtags indicative of conspiracy/hate/incitement, filtered by those and whittled it down to 193k.

Two new reports out today 
Over the last few weeks we've been looking at - you guessed it - #COVID19 and its harmful ripple effects online. The first report is focused on conspiracy theories, hate speech and incitements to violence on Twitter.

Anti-Chinese conspiracy theories were dominant, but a smaller number sought to exploit COVID-19 as a vehicle for anti-Semitism and to breathe new life into conspiracies about Bill Gates and the CIA.

Hashtags about general COVID-19 conspiracies (e.g. 'coronavirus' + 'coverup') are in the decline, while conspiracies linking COVID-19 with 5G have significantly increased in recent days.

A small subset are calling for real-world criminal damage, which of course has already taken place - affecting

Finally, 'chemtrail', 'fake cloud' & 'antivax' are all frequently used words in these posts. Both reports reveal opportunism in the tethering of tired old conspiracy theories to COVID-19, to reach vulnerable people, shaken in their isolation & going online in search of answers.
