One of my more contrarian takes: risk premia are not useful. Here's the argument:

How should we call “Gell-Mann amnesia, but for public services?” I.e. no entity provides you services that are anywhere as bad as the government — but I’m sure it’ll do great at X! “DMV-TSA amnesia?”

The #1 cause of startup death is making something no one wants. The #2 cause is spending too much. Those two account for so many deaths that I'm not even sure what #3 is. If you merely make something people want and don't spend too much, you're way ahead.

We have the technology to rapidly diagnose coronavirus in every major metro area. The problem is the bureaucracy! Decentralized testing should be immediately expedited, with executive order if necessary. Every CLIA-certified lab should be able to do this, it’s just RT-PCR.

It’s an extremely serious disease for at least some people. First US case: healthy 35 year old hospitalized. Condition worsening on day 10. Needed experimental drug to recover. That one case was a huge load on the medical system. And this is contagious.

Interesting graphic from the NYT that acknowledges the uncertainty around contagiousness and lethality of . I'm not sure about the positioning of every data point though.

For example, it seems the virus is more contagious than SARS currently (though we don't know where it will end up). Here's the comparison to SARS:

“The flu is a bigger threat than coronavirus” takes bug me because it’s only true right now - the scenario you worry about in a few weeks is flu season winding down but 2019nCoV accelerating

Hi Guys. Asking you a favor here. Please un-retweet that 2019nCov-HIV study that has been circulating. That's an overfitted, overhyped paper written to scare people. 1/x

Thank you. My argument is high (disposable) incomes lead to high quantities per capita and higher real prices (Baumol effect), but it's mostly quantities. Reliable domestic and intl price indices suggest prices don't rise that much faster than incomes.

I have a suggestion for : Within five minutes of the Senate acquittal vote, in his capacity as House Intelligence Committee Chairman, he should (a) notice a hearing scheduled for next week and (b) present with a subpoena to testify at it.

If there is a single key to success, it is the trait of being able to make things happen in the world—willfulness, determination, execution focus, not giving up when you hit a roadblock, the ability to solve any problem that comes your way, and self-belief.

‘Eat local’ is common advice for a low-carbon diet. But this has little impact on your carbon footprint. Transport accounts for only 6% of food emissions. Focus instead on *what* you eat. Food choices > food miles. Latest article:

China quarantines an entire city to stop a deadly virus from spreading. America decides to take people with “greater risk” direct to SFO. A better plan may be to send these folks supplies so they can shelter in place. Airlifting them out into a commercial airport is not smart.

Now that iOS and Android native cameras automatically detect and read QR codes, I believe they will finally become a thing in the West in the coming years. Anecdotally, I see more people using their vCard QR code as lock screen wallpaper to easily share contact info (good hack)

I'm skeptical that remote work will have as big an impact as many on Twitter believe. There's a night and day difference between pitches from founders in major startup metros and remote ones. Not so much in quality, but in recognizing what information is most important. /1

Dude, you're almost 80 years old and you haven't yet figured out this shit doesn't work? People stop building homes. Supply shortage gets *worse*. You hurt the people you're trying to help. Not rocket science. Just math.
