For the record, in no context is it ok to write hurtful things about your students’ bodies. They are real people. They have feelings too.

I just wanted to add on: as a teacher, your primary responsibility is to your students. They are not fodder for your memoir. Neither are they lessons-in-waiting. They are young people entrusted to your care. Treat them as you would wish teachers to treat your own kids

I agree. I am a teacher. I am a mother of 2 boys. I am a POC. While I applaud her inspirational role as a teacher, the descriptions are appalling. Now I will wonder if every white teacher thinks of my kids like this, but have just never said it out loud.

Oh, yes to the fodder! I couldn't stop thinking how this became about her. Loved that she gave voice to the students' works, but that is all teachers should do. We cannot make this about us. Write all the memoirs you want, but keep that separate from the students' works.

I just hope she got permission from all the kids she wrote about in the book but nothing about how she has handled this makes me think she would respect them enough to ask for consent first

That’s the thing about this that bothers me the most. Real children described so cruelly and thoughtlessly

Primary responsibility is to your students. Exactly. As a writer who has also worked with young people, I couldn't agree more. The young people I've worked with aren't resources for my fiction.

I know Teachers viewed me this way because I’ve had them say to me almost exactly the things she said about poc girls. It was hurtful

          1. It’s a pity it took Kate two days to respond. 2. This statement is still as much about Kate as it is about the kids 3. The terms used are so general as to mean almost anything so it will be interesting to see how this alleged learning is enacted in concrete contexts.
