It’s hard though. Nowadays people are really particular about whether or not the main character has agency. They want a character who pushes the plot forward. But so often that translates into extremely irritating characters who so rash and headstrong they are impossible to like

Take Vasya in the Girl in the Tower for example. It’s a very well-written book. But the entirety of the plot relies upon Vasya willfully cutting people off before they can explain why she shouldn’t do the thing. And people died as a result. I just can’t with that.

At this point I feel like it’s almost lazy to make rashness the character flaw the character has to overcome. Rash people move plots forward but I hate how many books I have read where the characters irritated me so much I actually kind of wanted them to die

I think this was part of the reason why Spinning Silver was such a refreshing read. The characters were clever and thoughtful

I don’t know if we’ll ever move away from books full of irritating headstrong characters because the powers that be (the people who buy books for publishers) have taken it into their heads that good books have proactive characters, not reactive ones

In my experience as a reader though, I’d so much rather follow the journey of a relatable character who reacts in a reasonable way, rather than a headstrong disaster leaving catastrophes in their wake

There are two Austen books that perfectly illustrate this: Persuasion and Emma. Anne from Persuasion is a passive, reactive heroine. Emma is your basic active disaster. She creates plot, rather than reacting to plot. And yes, many people love Emma. But I prefer Persuasion

Totally agree! Rational, bright characters who still manages to get themselves into more trouble before getting themselves out are way more interesting than the literary equivalent of shouting, “Don’t run up the stairs!” at the TV.
