My agent liked my pitch for the YA book, so desi-girl-in-historical-London is officially a go! I am SO excited you guys. It’s been months since I have drafted anything new. Making up stories is my favourite thing to do. It’s tentatively entitled The Physician’s Apprentice

  2. So at first I thought the glasses were cute and now I’m just distracted by them. I keep wondering if they match her outfits. They are bright blue!

It’s very cute how he finds her glasses attractive. I don’t think I’ve ever read that. Usually the glasses come off in a makeover that reveals the main character’s pretty eyes

I was living in fear of him comforting the old lady without washing his hands first. I feel like I’ve read stuff like that before

Reading Get a Life, Chloe Brown and I really appreciate Talia Hibbert for having her character wash his hand as soon as he was done fixing the toilet

But when there’s hardly anything written about a culture, and the one thing that gets traction is a white writer’s misinformed take, then actual damage is done (eg American Dirt)

And it doesn’t matter much when it’s a culture that’s been written to death. Like I could write a ya contemporary about an American high school and make all manner of mistakes and it wouldn’t really matter, cus there are SO many books about American high schools.

I mean, this is why though it’s so difficult to write cultures you don’t know. It’s hard to get accurate info when you rely on sources outside of that culture

Since twitter doesn’t allow threads I’ll just retweet myself with my comments 😤: I googled it and apparently there are dictionaries that define “mem sahib” as “a white woman of high social status in India” Which is just

  13. Seeing all the racist extracts from The Secret Garden, I am reminded of a writing friend who was writing a book set in a south Asian country and thought “mem sahib” was a special honorific for white women. It’s not. It’s like “ma’am”

  14. Actually, to be fair some of the contestants were awful. But most of them were really sweet. I don’t really get why they were in teams for the bulk of the show though. It allowed a few incompetent designers to get very far riding on the coattails of others

  15. Have you guys watched Next in Fashion on Netflix? I don’t wanna spoiler it, but it’s like the great British bake-off of fashion shows. The winner is the sweetest person ever, but they’re all so sweet and supportive.

I am all for making movie versions of these classics with poc actors, but slapping a poc on the cover does absolutely nothing. Incidentally there’s a Bollywood version of Emma if you wish to watch it.

The worst contender by far is of course still the secret garden, which is a wildly racist book and has no business featuring a poc on its cover
