    Trying out Vertex AI. Watch out for cost. Trained a model and it seems to run the full node-hours you specify. I assumed it would run a fraction of that since I used a small toy dataset. Ain't cheap if you just want to muck around and get into machine learning.

    Workflows in GCP looks interesting, but I would have expected to be able to use the gcloud cli directly in a step rather than having to call low-level APIs via http requests.

    Running dbt with Github Actions in your repo is the coolest thing yet. That way you can have your application and data analysis all in one spot. I have barely started scratching the surface with the workflows you can create.

    1GB may not sound like much, but that could be 100,000+ transactions. Only thing I do for prep is unnest some fields in the data source table if I need them in the report. You get amazing performance and no cost if you stay within the limit. 3/3

    I assumed you had to designate a dataset or table for use with BI Engine, but that is not the case. You can have as many tables in BigQuery as you want. The only thing that matters is that the size returned by the query is less than 1GB. 2/3

    I think I finally understand BI Engine a bit better. As long as the SQL query returns less than the current 1GB limit for Data Studio (and as long as that query doesn't use some advanced operators) it will get accelerated by BI Engine. 1/3

    It's a really nice user experience when BI Engine accelerates your Data Studio reports, but the beauty of BigQuery is that you can store data in JSON like format. So any query that has to unnest fields won't work with BI Engine.

    Congrats on finishing the book. Looks like a great resource, particularly for folks looking to develop on the GCP platform.

    Three months ago, I started to write the "Cloud Native Web Development" book and thought an empty Google Doc was stressful 😅. Now, one day before the publication, stress has a whole new meaning 😰.

    Took me hours to figure out that non-capturing groups in regex don't work properly in Apps Script Rhino. Run, run as fast as you can... to V8.

    BigQuery covid-19 dataset missing data for US for April 1. Maybe the summary table shouldn't be used anymore? Or the source files have changed.

    Tested a new sensitive scope in my Apps Scripts app and because it's not part of my approved scopes my app started showing (rightly) the insecure oauth message, even though my app wasn't even using the new API. Impressive security and lesson learned.

    Anyone have best practices for BigQuery BI engine? E.g. all tables inside one dataset, one big table vs many smaller ones, what happens if your table is a bit over reservation size, etc. But boy am I happy not to worry about costs when sharing Data Studio reports far and wide.
