I was 32 and my first novel hadn’t come out yet. I was invited to a dinner and sat next to him. I disagreed with him on a minor point. He shouted the word “rape” in my face to prove his. It was completely bizarre, disproportionate, and violent. https://twitter.com/zinziclemmons/status/992299032562229248?s=21 …

What’s so ironic is that I was making a point about how my piece had been rejected by
@NewYorker & I’d never be able to tell whether it was bc of bias or not. The same@NewYorker that just paid him to write his long attempt-at-exculpating essay.Show this thread -
I read that piece and thought: Did no one at
@NewYorker think to ask him what “I hurt people” might mean? Fucking really? In this era?Show this thread -
He didn’t physically assault me. But shouting the word “rape” in my face after knowing me for maybe ten minutes is absolutely verbal sexual assault. I left that dinner halfway through. And I’d sat down so excited to meet one of my literary heroes.

Ever since, I’ve kept an ear out for stories similar to mine. There are many. They are worse.

I’m so sorry he did that to you. I’ve met men like that. Scary, frustrating, and hurtful when you have to have a conversation with them, especially if you can’t walk away and/or if others are not helping or contributing to it.
